What is a veterinary ophthalmologist?
A veterinary ophthalmologist is a veterinarian who has completed extensive additional training in the medical and surgical care of the eye, and who has passed a rigorous board certification process through the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO).
The pathway includes four years of veterinary school, a one-year general internship in small animal medicine and surgery (often followed by a specialty internship), and a three to four year residency dedicated specifically to ophthalmology. Candidates then sit for the ACVO board examination, a multi-day test of clinical knowledge and surgical skill. Vets who pass become Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, abbreviated DACVO.
There are fewer than 700 board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists in the world. Their training, equipment, and depth of experience go beyond what primary care practices typically offer.

Dr. Shelby Reinstein is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. Dr. Sara Adelman is residency-trained in comparative ophthalmology and practices limited to diseases of the eye while completing her board certification.

Dr. Reinstein founded Vet Vision Center with a clear vision: to create a place where advanced ophthalmology care feels as thoughtful and supportive as it is precise. As a board-certified specialist, she brings deep clinical expertise in both medical and surgical eye care, paired with a commitment to making every client feel informed, heard, and at ease.
Her approach is equal parts meticulous and compassionate. Whether she’s guiding a pet owner through a new diagnosis or collaborating with a referring veterinarian on a complex case, Dr. Reinstein is known for her clarity, honesty, and dedication to doing what’s best for each individual patient.
Dr. Sara Adelman
Residency-trained in Ophthalmology
Practice Limited to Diseases of the Eye
Dr. Adelman combines advanced ophthalmic training with a thoughtful, grounded approach to patient care. She is dedicated to helping pets maintain—and regain—their vision, while ensuring owners feel confident and supported every step of the way.
Known for her transparency and attention to detail, Dr. Adelman takes the time to walk through each diagnosis and treatment plan with care, working closely with both pet owners and referring veterinarians.
In addition to her work with small animals, Dr. Adelman also provides specialized ophthalmology services for equine patients through a partnership with Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center.
ACVO Service Animal Eye Exam Program (ACVO SAVES)
Each spring, board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists across North America provide free eye examinations for working, service, and therapy animals through the ACVO Service Animal Eye Exam Program.
This comprehensive ophthalmic screening is designed to detect early signs of eye disease that could affect an animal’s comfort, health, or ability to perform their important role.
Eligible animals include:
- Guide dogs for individuals who are blind or visually impaired
- Service dogs assisting individuals with disabilities
- Certified therapy animals
- Search and rescue dogs
- Mounted police horses
- Police K-9s
Any animal that has been formally certified as a working or service animal is welcome to register.
Dr. Reinstein has proudly participated in the ACVO Service Animal Eye Exam Program since 2013. Registration typically opens in early spring through the ACVO SAVES website, and exams are performed by appointment at Vet Vision Center during the designated program period.

Ophthalmology is one part of your pet’s care. When a diagnosis points to a condition outside our specialty, or when your pet needs testing we don’t offer on-site, we connect you with the partners we’d choose for our own pets. Some of these specialists come to Vet Vision Center for scheduled cases, while others operate independent practices.
Onsite Ultrasounds from Dr. Johanna Frank, DVM, DVSc, DAVCIM
Board-certified internist providing outpatient ultrasound, echocardiography, and internal medicine consultations on-site at Vet Vision Center. We schedule appointments through our team when your pet’s eye condition calls for systemic evaluation.
