Applying Eye Ointment to Your Dog or Cat

Giving eye medication can feel a little intimidating at first, but with a calm approach and a little patience, most pets adjust very well. Remember, you’re helping your pet heal, and each treatment is an important step toward recovery.

Before You Begin

• Wash your hands thoroughly.
• Have the eye ointment and a few treats ready.
• Choose a quiet, well-lit area where your pet feels comfortable.
• Take a deep breath—your pet will often respond to your calm, confident demeanor.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Help Your Pet Get Comfortable

Have your pet sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Smaller pets may feel more secure on your lap or on a non-slip surface. With some pets, it can be helpful to have your pet in an area where they are not as comfortable, such as a table or countertop-like surface.  If needed, ask someone to gently help keep your pet still while offering quiet reassurance.

2. Hold the Eye Open Gently

Using one hand, gently lift the upper eyelid with your thumb or finger. You only need to open the eye enough to see where the ointment will be placed.

3. Apply the Ointment

Hold the tube just above the eye, taking care not to let the tip touch the eye, eyelids, fur, or your fingers.

Squeeze a small ribbon of ointment (about ¼ of an inch, (the size of a grain of rice) or as directed by your veterinarian) directly onto the surface of the eye.

4. Let Your Pet Blink

Release the eyelids and allow your pet to blink naturally. With the warmth of your pet’s body, the ointment will quickly soften and blinking spreads the medication evenly across the eye.

If your veterinarian recommends it, you may gently close the eyelids and lightly massage the area around the eye for a few seconds to help distribute the ointment.

5. Offer Praise and a Treat

Tell your pet what a wonderful job they did! Offer praise, gentle affection, and a favorite treat to help create a positive experience.

Helpful Tips

• A little ointment goes a long way—don’t worry if some blurs your pet’s vision for a few minutes.
• If you miss the eye, simply try again calmly. It’s okay if it takes a couple of attempts.
• If both eyes require treatment, use the prescribed amount in each eye.
• If you’re using both eye drops and eye ointment, apply the eye drops first, wait 5–10 minutes, then apply the ointment unless your veterinarian has instructed otherwise.
• Replace the cap immediately after use and store the medication according to the label instructions.

When to Contact Your Veterinarian

Please contact your veterinary team if:

• You are unable to administer the medication after several attempts.
• Your pet seems unusually painful when the eye is touched.
• The eye becomes more red or swollen.
• You notice thick yellow or green discharge.
• Your pet keeps the eye tightly closed or continues rubbing at it.
• You accidentally touch the tip of the ointment tube to the eye or another surface and are unsure whether it has become contaminated.
