An Elizabethan collar, often called an E-collar or “cone,” is one of the most important tools for protecting your pet’s eyes during the healing process. While most pets aren’t thrilled to wear one at first, the collar plays a vital role in preventing rubbing, scratching, or pawing at the eye—actions that can delay healing or even cause serious injury.
Although your pet may seem frustrated initially, most dogs and cats adjust within a day or two. Your patience, encouragement, and reassurance will help them become more comfortable wearing their collar.
Why Your Pet Needs an E-Collar
Your pet’s eyes are delicate, especially after surgery or when healing from an injury or infection. Even a single rub with a paw or against furniture can:

Keep the E-Collar On

- Provide a comfortable resting area with plenty of room to settle.
If your pet is unable to eat or drink while wearing the collar, contact your veterinary team before removing it.
Check the Fit
A properly fitted E-collar should:
- Be snug enough that your pet cannot pull it off.
- Allow you to comfortably fit two fingers between the collar and your pet’s neck.
- Extend beyond the tip of your pet’s nose to prevent them from reaching the eye.

- Your pet is able to reach the affected eye while wearing the collar.
